If you walk around the College of San Mateo you are bound to see Michael Manneh around the campus. He started working for CSM in July 2011. He had been working for City College in San Francisco for fourteen years. He applied and received a position from CSM in the communication study center where he is an instructional aide. Michael received a BA in English literature in 1996 as a student at SF City College. He was the first in his family to attend college, and influenced his younger siblings to also go to college. It had been his parents wish to see their children go to college. At SF City College he saw students who were struggling when they were first coming into college so he became a tutor and mentor to them. When he came to CSM he continued to help students as he had at City College. At CSM you can find Michael as an advisor to the Polynesian Club as well as a secondary advisor in the Psychology Club. He supports all the clubs at CSM. He has also been asked to be a secondary advisor to Phi Theta Kappa (PTK). Michael said that he is “very honored to be asked to be part of the PTK”. Michael is more active in the Phi Theta Kappa at this time, attending many meeting and working with students/members. Michael has even helped students with basic questions, which are non academic, to help them get through a certain moment in their lives. He feels his work with the students is very rewarding. Michael feels that success of the student starts with the desire and passion of the student, but it also means that they need to know how to seek out the services. Once they have the passion and the help, he feels that the student will become successful. He feels that he helps the PTK by being an additional resource to them. He says he has learned from them about leadership from a student perspective, and how students work to improve themselves. As rewarding as his work with the students is to Michael, many groups and students at CSM would argue that they are getting the best part of the deal, they are getting assistance from a very caring and helpful Michael Manneh. ~Alex King~ "Given Our Chance" Wins Remi Award at Houston Worldfest |
